What is Rotary?

Rotary is a global network of neighbors, friends, and leaders who unite to create lasting change across the world, in our communities, and in ourselves. With over 1.2 million members in more than 200 countries, Rotarians are people of action who share a common purpose: Service Above Self.

Rotary members work together to solve real problems with creative thinking, professional expertise, and a deep commitment to making a difference. From eradicating polio to promoting peace and supporting youth, we’re creating positive, sustainable impact around the globe.

The Vision That Started It All
Rotary began with the vision of Paul P. Harris, a Chicago attorney who founded the first Rotary club in 1905. His dream was simple yet powerful: to bring together professionals from diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas, form meaningful friendships, and give back to their communities.

That small gathering in a Chicago office has since grown into one of the world’s most respected humanitarian organizations. Harris believed that “Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.”

More than a century later, those results continue to speak for themselves.

The 4-Way Test
Adopted by Rotary in 1943, the 4-Way Test remains a guiding principle for all Rotarians. It challenges us to apply integrity, fairness, and kindness in everything we think, say, or do:

1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

This timeless code of ethics helps Rotarians make decisions that build trust and strengthen communities.

Rotary’s Causes
Rotary focuses its efforts where we can make the most impact. Our causes reflect the heart of our mission to improve lives, build international understanding, and create a better world:

  • Promoting peace
  • Fighting disease
  • Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
  • Supporting mothers and children
  • Advancing education
  • Growing local economies
  • Protecting the environment

From global grants to hands-on local service, every Rotary project aligns with one or more of these causes driven by members who turn compassion into action.

Rotary in Action
Today, Rotary’s spirit of service continues to unite people of all backgrounds and professions. We’re not afraid to dream big or take bold steps toward a better future. Together, we’ve helped reduce polio cases by 99.9% worldwide, built schools, supported clean water initiatives, and fostered peace through education and dialogue.

Rotary isn’t just a club, it's a movement of everyday people doing extraordinary things.
